Hamilton Thunderbirds moving in the
Wright direction |
Hamilton Thunderbirds are longing
to chase the sun, and Thursday night they will be that
process as the Intercounty Baseball League will hit the
practice floor in Frozen Ropes at Oakville, Ontario.
“It’s hard to believe that
we finally get started Thursday (March 6, 2008). I can
hardly wait, and our players are the same way,” said
Hamilton Thunderbirds Business and General Manager Adeo
Calcagni, today. “We have a number of top prospects,
former pros and a Hamilton Tiger-Cats Canadian Football
League prospect in the outfield, Richard Wright.”

The club will workout each Thursday
at 8:30 p.m. in the Oakville facility until Monday, April
28, 2008 when they hit the field in Hamilton’s
Bernie Arbour Memorial Stadium at 7 p.m.
This season the Thunderbirds will play
18 games at home (36-game IBL schedule) from Arcelor-Mittal/Dofasco
Opening Day against the Guelph Royals at Bernie Sunday
May 4 through Sunday, July 20 when they wind up their
regular season schedule against the Barrie Baycats and
former Toronto Blue Jays hurler Paul Spoljaric.
The home slate includes nine Sunday dates, seven Fridays
and a Saturday date on June 14 against the London Majors,
which will mark the 30th anniversary of the 1978 Hamilton
Cardinals (forerunner to the Thunderbirds) winning the city’s
lone Intercounty championship. The Cards defeated the Majors
4-1 in games that year. A Tuesday date on June 17 will round
out Hamilton’s home skein against the IBL champion,
Toronto Maple Leafs.

Brantford’s
New Era for the IBL Allstar Game
|
It’s
a completely new ball game for the New Era IBL Allstar
Game, which is being hosted by the (defending 2006
Intercounty Baseball League champion Brantford Red
Sox.
The main objective for the New Era Allstar Organizing Committee chaired by Red
Sox General Manager Len Hannam is to display the City of Brantford and instil
in others the pride that they (the Red Sox players) have in playing in the community.
The game is just one portion of the festivities that will be taking place tomorrow
(Saturday) in Arnold Anderson Stadium in downtown Brantford. The ball club has
organized entertainment for the day and a series of activities.
“We want to show people that we are more than just
a baseball team, that we are a great organization that
can put on
a first-class event,” said Hannam, “We are
expecting in excess of 1,500 people on Saturday. And that
is with
the game being televised as well.”
By winning the
Intercounty title last August, Brantford became the host
organization, and this weekend
the organizers are hoping that close to 200 former IBL stars
will be in attendance for the event.
Preceding the New Era
Allstar match, will be a five-inning IBL Allstar Alumni
Game involving close to 70 former players spanning
several generations.
According to Hannam, the Alumni Game concept has captured
peoples’ attention already with many thinking
back to the many great players and teams within the
League.

"I am very excited to be the Field Manager of the Allstar
Team, and look forward to the game and events that will be
taking place in Brantford. I give a lot of credit to my own
2006 London team, and my coaches, because without their hard
work I would not have received this opportunity,” said
Chanderdat.
